Dolby's board hired a licensee executive to run the licensor.
Marc Whitten, hired from Meta, CEO since August 27, spent 20 years at companies paying Dolby's royalty. Fourteen years building Xbox and Xbox Live. Two as Chief Product Officer at Sonos. Five running Amazon's Fire TV and Kindle devices.
Kevin Yeaman, the CFO the board promoted to CEO in 2009, spent 17 years on Atmos and Vision. Licensing was 93% of revenue last quarter. He left the board and consults through 2027.
Samsung and Google built Eclipsa, a royalty-free spatial audio format Samsung now streams on its own TVs. And Dolby Laboratories expects revenue from foundational audio, its older codecs, to decline slightly this fiscal year. The AI disruption story is unproven.
At Eagle Talon, we map a new CEO's operating record, capital allocation history and incentive design against that licensing pressure. Three reads:
Product judgment: proven across three Xbox generations and Fire TV.
Operational discipline: inconclusive. Seven months as Cruise CEO, June 2024 to February 2025, ended when GM stopped funding robotaxis, a decision made above him.
Capital allocation and licensing economics: he's untested, never having run a licensing business or a public company.
His 600,000 performance units vest only at share prices from $75 to $175 within five years. From the $59.95 close on October 16, the top hurdle is a near tripling.
Our read: a rational hire. A device-side executive knows what a licensee pays for and what it drops for a free format.
The stock: down 3.9% on August 27 while the S&P 500 rose, 5.3% below the pre-announcement close a day later, nearly recovered by mid-September, then given back. The handoff, agreed July 10, was orderly; the drop reads as a verdict on the person. Some of the drop was likely profit-taking after a 25% run since July's results.
His first earnings will land November 17. Can a man who spent 20 years judging what a Dolby logo was worth nearly triple Dolby's value?
