Kraft Heinz just named Nicolas Amaya president of its North America business.

North America is where the profit pool sits. So when the board swaps leaders in this unit, it’s usually a response to where execution is getting harder — and falling short.

Packaged food companies are dealing with a messy mix right now: slower volumes, tougher private-label pressure, consumers pushing back on higher prices, and margins normalizing. In that environment, results get won or lost in the unglamorous places:

Amaya’s background is notable too. He was hired away from Kellanova, another big branded food platform.
