Salesforce's August showed what the market pays for, and it is Marc Benioff.
Srini Tallapragada, the engineering chief, stepped back in August. From August 6 he is special advisor to Benioff through August 2027: salary and bonus to January 31, 2027, then $75,000 a year, equity still vesting, no board seat. A retainer, not an exit. The stock fell 3.2% on a day the software ETF (IGV) fell 1.9%, and recovered the next day.
Three weeks later Benioff led the call; the stock rose 22.6% on August 27, against 7.7% for software. Agentforce recurring revenue past $1.5 billion, up over 240% on a broadened definition. In the quarter sat $2.6 billion of net investment gains, mostly the Anthropic markup, which supplied $2.53 of the $5.90 in adjusted earnings per share.
Three dimensions show where things stand:
1. Authority structure. Co-CEOs Keith Block (2018 to 2020) and Bret Taylor (2021 to 2023) both ended with Benioff alone; August left three Presidents under one CEO.
2. Leader fit. Engineering now reports to Rohan Kumar, hired in June from Microsoft, where he led agent-based data security. Nothing shipped at Salesforce yet.
3. Capital allocation. The Anthropic stake grew from $1.7 billion in January to about $5.1 billion by July 31: unrealized, non-operating, unrepeatable at that size.
I read August as the market paying for Benioff twice, once for the quarter and once for the Anthropic bet. The other read is three Presidents as succession planning for a CEO since 2001, aged 61, and no successor named.
The stock has fallen 9.6% since August 27 and 14% year-to-date through October 8 while the software ETF is flat. Salesforce guided $3.42 to $3.44 adjusted earnings per share, no markup in it. Land there with Agentforce still compounding and the product earns its price apart from him.
If Benioff stepped back tomorrow, what would you pay for Salesforce?
