Two Numbers From the Same Survey Run on Different Calendars

Two numbers from the same survey run on different calendars.

84% of large-cap CEOs say AI returns take longer than six months. 53% of institutional investors expect payback in six months or less. That puts about one CEO in six on the market's timetable.

Teneo's Vision 2026 survey covered more than 350 public-company CEOs and 400 institutional investors. Together they represent about $19 trillion in company and portfolio value.

IBM showed what that mismatch can cost. On July 14 it pre-announced second-quarter revenue of $17.2 billion against consensus near $17.9 billion. It also cut full-year constant-currency growth guidance to 4-5% from more than 5%.

The stock closed down more than 25%, its worst day since at least 1968. Roughly $67 billion in market value was erased, about 100 times the quarterly revenue shortfall.

Management pointed to customers shifting spending toward AI servers, storage and memory, away from software and mainframes.

Netflix is the cleaner test. It met estimates, then guided third-quarter revenue to $12.86 billion, roughly a percentage point below consensus. That implies about 12% growth, its slowest in three years. Shares fell close to 9% after hours.

Adobe is the counter-example. Third-quarter revenue rose 13% to $6.76 billion, beating the high end of guidance and lifting full-year targets. Its AI products passed $650 million in annual recurring revenue, up 150%. The stock gained 2.2%.

That disclosure is what a credible timeline looks like before the returns arrive.

At Eagle Talon, we map each CEO's stated return timeline against what the valuation multiple already assumes. Then we test that timeline against the capital allocation record and the compensation design behind the spending.

A heavy AI spender that has not published a standalone AI revenue figure in two more quarters does not have a fixed payback date.

Which of your holdings has a CEO who has named an AI payback date, and which is still asking you to take the timeline on faith?
