12 Years. $12B+ in R&D. Where’s the proof it works?
Evan Spiegel has been betting Snap's future on augmented reality since 2013. The market wants to see the economics before it funds the next decade of that bet.
When an activist says a company could be worth five times its current value, what's the first question you ask?
Ours is: if that's true, why isn't the CEO doing it already?
In late March, Irenic Capital disclosed a 2.5% stake in Snap and sent a letter to CEO Evan Spiegel with four demands:
➤ Spin off or shut down Specs, Snap's AR glasses unit, which has absorbed $3.5 billion in capital investment
➤ Cut 21% of the workforce
➤ Accelerate buybacks
➤ Focus on AI monetization
Irenic sees a path to $35 billion and Snap shares rose more than 12% on the news.
Before the announcement, Snap shares had fallen 45% year to date to a $7 billion market cap.
A 12% gain after a 45% decline reflects many factors — short covering, momentum, and genuine interest in the plan among them. But the magnitude signals concern about confidence in the existing direction.
Evan Spiegel built something genuinely unusual. 943 million monthly active users don't accumulate by accident. But there's a pattern in founder-led companies: when a CEO's vision outpaces what investors will support before the business runs out of runway, the company starts spending to justify the narrative rather than to generate returns. Specs is that tension made visible.
Snap already had a $500 million buyback and a $400 million AI partnership with Perplexity before Irenic arrived. That shifts the diagnosis from strategy to execution — or something harder: whether Snap's ad model can ever generate the yield the business needs at scale.
What I'd watch: whether Spiegel uses this moment to make changes he already knew were needed, or makes the minimum moves to satisfy Irenic while leaving that structural question about ad yield unanswered.
When an activist's letter moves a stock 12% in a day, what does that tell you about current leadership's credibility with the market?
