Fiserv promoted the executive who ran the segment that needs fixing.

Takis Georgakopoulos was promoted to CEO on June 15. He had been co-president of Technology and Merchant Solutions, the segment that runs Clover, its small-business payments platform, and sits at the center of its troubles.

He got the seat because Mike Lyons left for Truist after 18 months. Lyons spent those months cleaning up a mess he didn't make: his predecessor, Frank Bisignano, set aggressive Clover targets before leaving to run the Social Security Administration. Lyons reset 2025 guidance, cutting adjusted earnings from about $10.30 to no more than $8.60 and organic growth from 10% to 4%.

Georgakopoulos doesn't inherit a clean story. First-quarter organic revenue fell 4%: the Clover-heavy merchant segment down 1%, financial solutions down 6%. Meanwhile, a securities suit alleges Fiserv inflated Clover's growth metrics. And merchants have complained about its fees.

Georgakopoulos' background fits this exact challenge. He ran global payments at J.P. Morgan before joining Fiserv in 2024, so he knows it well.

The board chose continuity over an outside reset, reaffirming the 2026 outlook the same day.

The risk is harder to dismiss. The executive closest to the troubled segment has become the CEO who owns it. He drove the Clover push and helped reset the guidance, presumably at Lyons' direction. The lowered bar is partly his.

Two things to watch his first two quarters: whether organic growth in the merchant segment stabilizes, and whether he discusses Clover with specific numbers or retreats to long-term-strategy talk. The first tests execution. The second tells you which kind of CEO he is: an operator who confronts the numbers, or a communicator who manages around them.

Lyons spent his career in banking and went back to it. Georgakopoulos built his in payments and stayed. Each chose the ground he knows best. But does knowing Fiserv better than anyone make him the right person to fix it?
